Can we really live without technology?

There's a virus creeping through our class. Dr. Kilborn's computer crashed from a malfunctioning CD-ROM. Cody's computer is on the fritz with a video card problem. And my car broke its head gaskets last night. It is in the repair shop until Thursday.  I cannot get home without my car! I live 75 miles away. So can I live without technology? No...

I am hoping this virus does not spread to anyone's machines; life is much more difficult when the machines you depend on do not operate. My husband came late last night so we spent the night in a motel. Cable television is not very entertaining after midnight; I'm glad I do not subscribe to it at home. My husband drove back to Alexandria and is driving here again; I taught my 191 class today so there was not enough time to go home with him. Spending the day on campus was okay; I updated my students' grades and corrected papers. But I do not want to live like this. It will be nice to get my car back and return to normal life. Life without technology is just a hassle.

Maybe there is not a virus. I think that bad things happen in threes. Dr. Kilborn, Cody, me; maybe the curse on this class is over.

  1. Bummer. Serious bummer.

Well, let's reverse the bad things in threes. Yesterday, I got my laptop back. They had repaired the CD-ROM drive and had reinstalled the system. Unfortunately, they'd installed a bit earlier version of the system than I'd had on the computer, so I couldn't open any of my Microsoft applications. I had purchased a few months back the newest operating system, but hadn't yet installed it because I hadn't had the time. As you know, though, it's hard to do any work if the applications you need to use don't open. So while I was working on my office computer yesterday afternoon, I installed Leopard on my personal laptop.

What a hulking big program. I started the installation at the beginning of office hours -- 1 -- and when I left for Senate at 3, the program was still in the process of installing. It said it had over an hour left. So when I came back from Senate at 5:40, it was done. Then I just had to redo my wireless so that I could get to email and D2L from home. No big deal. I have nothing else to do but fix technology these days -- just as you have nothing else to do but wait for your head gasket to be fixed. ;)

In any case, my computer is now fixed. So one issue is taken care of. Hopefully, you'll get a call today saying that your car is ready a bit early. Then we just need to hear good news from Cody.

  2. I brought my machine in to a tech shop on Tuesday; I got the diagnostics feedback today and it looks like I will be buying a new rig. The good news is that the price is right and I've been wanting a reason to upgrade for awhile now.

  3. I picked up my car on Thursday afternoon. when we bought the car, we had purchased a powertran warranty (whatever that is) which covered the entire costs of repair and towing. I drove back to Alexandria happy to have the freedom to go when and where I want.

Tonight (Friday) as we were leaving to go to dinner with some friends, I noticed a reddish leak under my car. Later, when I checked, it had gotten bigger. I think the radiator is leaking again which was one of the problems I told the repair shop. Urrgh!

Like Cody, I am also looking at upgrading. My oldest son just got a really good deal on a new car so my husband was thinking that I should get a new car too. I put 40,000 miles on this car driving to SCSU for two years. Maybe the car is just worn out.
